05/12/2012 Our Website... This old girl's days are numbered... Sometimes I feel like this website is one step away from being a GeoCities homepage. While we're at it, we might as well ask for you to sign our "guest book", that is, if you aren't being bombarded by GIFS. We have a new website in the works, and hopefully we can launch it within the next month and bid farewell to this royal hunk of JUNK. -PB

Barfly, and NFLD
So we are going to England next week to play shows! We're very excited, as it's our first time playing outside of North America. We have been added to a show next Thursday May 17th at Camden Barfly in London to open for DZ Deathrays. After London, we make our way over to Liverpool for a few shows at Liverpool SoundCity. It's going to be a great trip. Another great trip that we have just confirmed will be next month in Newfoundland. We will be playing three shows in St. John's, so be sure to check out our shows section for details as usual. Also, we should give Saint John, NB (see the difference, huh?) a little recognition as we'll be playing there on June 2nd at Pepper's. That, and our album comes out on Sonic Unyon on June 5th..... exciting times. Oh, and check out this photo of us with our beloved van. -PB
Liverpool Sound City, and Showssss
We are extremely excited to make our first trip over to the UK to play Liverpool Sound City! Be sure to check out the shows section too, as we are staying busy with shows in Sackville NB, and Halifax this weekend. We're also in the midst of planning our album release show in Halifax for A Ghost History, and a 6 week summer tour. We'll be heading through Quebec, Ontario, and into the US.. another first for us. In the mean time, be sure to check out our new video for "The Past Rests" off of our new album, and download a free track There All The Time With You from our bandcamp page. We're excited to finally get a hold of the new records, which we will have available digitally, in CD, and in hand numbered deluxe vinyl! They'll be available through Sonic Unyon, through our webstore, and at shows. Keep checking back for news, things are about to get crazy... -PB

TOUR!
Pretty straight forward: we're going to Ontario and Quebec and the prime objective is not to eat street meat and poutine's. We will be playing five shows while in Ontario and Quebec for what I will dub as our Mega-March-Madness-Mini-Tour. Stops include; London, Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, & Hamilton. During the tour we're set to play two festivals; Under The Snow Festival in Montreal, and Canadian Music Week in Toronto. Check out our shows section for details. Oh, and check out the hot new whip (van?) we just picked up! -PB 03/07/2012
Back On The Horse.
Well, it has been a while! But, rest assured that we have been very busy during this news hiatus. We played Montreal with our pals from Aim Low, and snuck in a show at Gallery Connexion in Fredericton en route. We are preparing to depart for our Ontario Mini Tour in a few days which will take us to London, Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, & Hamilton. Be sure to check our shows section for more details. During that tour we're set to play two festivals; Under The Snow Festival in Montreal, and Canadian Music Week in Toronto. All in all, it will be a lot of fun. We are also planning a UK tour, and will have an announcement to make about the release of our long awaited full length album A Ghost History. Stay tuned, and see you on the road... -PB 01/12/2012
Roster Change
Recently Kirstan Moore, our now former bass player, made the decision to leave Kestrels for personal reasons. Kirstan is a great guy and we are sad to lose him as part of our band. Although Kirstan (aka Surly-K) won't be playing with us any longer, we'll always remember all the awesome times we had when he was in Kestrels. Kirstan is a talented Studio & Sound Engineer, and we wish nothing but the best of luck as he continues on his way. Kirstan's place will currently be filled by both Chad's brother, Devin Peck aka "Brother Devin", and Jim "Wing King" MacAlpine formerly of North Of America (!!!). Upward and onward... -PB

La Belle Province, Canadian Music Week, & Secretsssss...
We've been hard at work on some behind the scenes news that should be coming your way very soon. Is it a secret? Yes. Is it worth waiting for? Yes. So, hold on! Some good news for touring is that we are playing two shows, in Fredericton and in Montreal in two weeks time. We're extremely excited for both shows, as we always get treated extremely well in Fredericton, and are looking forward to seeing our friends from the CJLO (Concordia) Radio Station! Be sure to "Like" us on Facebook and to keep up to date with news and show announcements as they come up there.
We're also getting ready for our Canadian Music Week Showcase that is coming up in March. We always love playing in Toronto and are looking forward to the opportunity to play with a lot of great bands from all over. -PB 12/08/2011
FREE EP is almost finished. This has been some time in the making, and after many hangups and delays we are just about ready to release it. Consider it a Christmas present from Kestrels! The EP will include a song from our upcoming LP 'A Ghost History", a cover of 'Thorn' from My Bloody Valentine's essential EP 'You Made Me Realise', and a B-Side from the new LP. In the meantime, you can still download our new single 'There All The Time Without You' from our bandcamp page for free. In the meantime, back to work. -PB

Ontariooooo... We are heading to Ontario next week to play two shows, one for the Sonic Unyon Christmas party on December 16th, and another in Toronto the next night. We are extremely excited to be playing both of these shows, and are excited to being playing with SIANspheric both nights (nostalgia!) as well. More good news, we will be touring through Ontario this March, but we will also be playing Canadian Music Week in Toronto. This is a huge annual festival and we're excited to be playing it. The long and short: we're looking forward to being back in Ontario.
In the meantime, please check out Sonic Unyon Records, SIANspheric, Canadian Music Fest, Canadian Music Week, and our shows section. -PB

NSMW, Dal, Fredericton, Sonic Unyon... News Overload. Hey folks, lots of happenings these days with the K-birds. For starters, we are heading down to Yarmouth tonight for two performances at Molson Canadian Nova Scotia Music Week! We are really excited to be playing this annual festival, and if you manage to make it down to Yarmouth, you should make a point of seeing us, but certainly do not miss us Saturday night at The Rood Grand Ballroom at 1:00am. We have two Halifax shows coming up as well, one at Tribeca on November 10th, and another in association with CKDU Radio at Dalhousie University on November 17th.
We also have a "secret" show coming up that will be happening somewhere on the east coast. This "secret" show will be happening the night before we play The Cellar at the University of New Brunswick... but you'll just have to wait and see. December and January will see us making stops in both Hamilton, Toronto & Montreal, one of those shows being the Sonic Unyon Christmas party! We love Sonic Unyon, most notably Ringo Deathstarr, so please check them out online and go buy some Ringo Deathstarr records stat. As always, be sure to check our shows section.
Shows aside, we have also been very busy working on our new full length album, titled A Ghost History, that we will be releasing around February of 2012. The record just recently came back from being mastered at Golden Mastering in California, and needless to say it sounds AMAZING. We're very excited about this record, and to to be able to play the new songs off of it. Currently, we have released a single from the new album that is available as a free download from our bandcamp page. Please feel free to download it HERE. In addition to this free single, we will also be releasing some other free material to bide our time between the release of our new album. These other free downloads will include; a cover of My Bloody Valentine's Thorn, a B-side from the new album, and a live version of one of the new songs from A Ghost History. All of this is very excited, so please stay tuned and check back for more news. If you don't already, follow us on Facebook or Twitter. -PB

Remember, Remember, September, September... Am I drunk? No, just bored. Looks like it's time to update the news section! Well September turned out to be a busy month for us. We played a bunch of shows and were busy finishing up recording and mixing our new full length album too. We have a few weeks off from playing now where we can focus on getting the mixes DONE, and getting them sent off to get mastered. We're getting the new LP mastered by Golden Mastering in Ventura California. They have a pretty awesome client list that, needless to say, we'll be happy to be a part of. Check them out at http://www.goldenmastering.com. We also recorded a studio session at CHSR-FM while in Fredericton recently. That should be hitting the airwaves in November just in time for our return to play The Cellar at UNB. If all goes to plan, we'll be releasing a track from that session on our new upcoming free EP, which you will be able to download off of our bandcamp page; kestrels.bandcamp.com. -PB 09/02/2011

Ontario Mini-Tour & New Releases on the way...
We just returned from a mini-tour to Ontario after taking the majority of the summer off to hang out and work on our tans. Chad was in NYC, while Kirstan and I hung out in Halifax mostly. I went down to NYC for a week myself and hung out too. During that period, our friend Tim Wheeler from the band Ash confirmed that he will play a guitar solo on our new record. So, stay tuned for that!
Mini-Tour: The few shows we played in Ontario last week went well. We were really happy to play in Hamilton for our friends from Sonic Unyon, we had a great turnout at The Drake in Toronto, and the show in Windsor was fun too. We also got to do a Southern Souls session courtesy of our friend Mitch. Stay tuned for that video shortly too.
New Releases: We will be releasing a free digital EP this fall, followed by a full length Vinyl EP in January. We're going to be busy people over the next few months, because on top of that we have a solid line-up of shows coming up. Check out our TOUR/SHOWS section to see a full listing of our upcoming shows. Excited for the fall! -PB

LYRICS MAN, MAINLY
Here’s some good news: our cover of Black Tambourine’s ”Throw Aggi Off The Bridge” debuted at number 29 on the CBC Radio 3 chart (available as a free download from iTunes) this week. If you want to support their decision, feel free to email feedback@cbcradio3.com and tell them how much you like it.
I'm here typing up the lyrics to the new LP (which is currently untitled...suggestions to kestrels@noyesrecords.com) and decided to take a break from that tedium to write a brief synopsis of some of the songs for the new LP. The titles are obviously very much in a working format right now.
1) Hate Trap – kind of like When You Sleep by MBV if Superchunk played it. Probably my favorite of the new songs. I have a demo of this from 2008 with sequenced drums. It is not great.
2) Beverb – we’ve been playing this as a set opener. It’s pretty. I think I’m going to call this one “The One Up Downstairs” as a reference to an early version of the song that sounded like said band.
3) Coffie – this song has been kicking around for a while, but we always felt like it was missing something. So we dropped the bridge, changed the drumbeat and added a lot of guitar. Now that’s shocking.
4) Velvets – Rachael (who played cello on the Primary Colors song “Plastic Dresses”) added some strings to this one. It sounds like the Velvet Underground circa the 3rd record. The last song written for the album.
5) Decoder – this song is a pretty quick/short song in the key of A. Stompy in the chorus with some weird guitar elsewhere.
6) Addenda – Started out tight, ended up sloppy. Lots of loud.
7) Tweenagers – My second favorite. It actually started out as a We Need Secrets song (my side project – weneedsecrets.bandcamp.com) but fits our sound a bit better. We’ve been playing this one a bit lately.
8) New Pop – written in about 5 minutes and borrows generously from Life Without Buildings. We usually end with this one.
So that’s that. My friend Claudius might be mixing a few of the songs. I have to sing a few more things and record a few more guitar tracks (with my new Hiwatt amp!), but it’s 90% there. We’re hoping to release it in September. We’ll likely do a deluxe vinyl edition only this time around (plus digital of course). I’m living in Manhattan for the summer, so I’m leaving all of the hard work to Paul and Kirstan. Whoops. -Chad 06/10/2011
SUMMER LOGO?
I think that it looks pretty cool.... we'll see how it holds up against the classic BOLD. -PB 06/09/2011
TRURO + NEW MERCH? + SEAHORSE SHOW + PROMO SHOTS
So we made took a short jaunt up to Truro last weekend and played with our friends in LP again. Good.. wait.. great dudes! The show was fun as always, and K-Man threw his bass through my drums to finish off our set. Carnage! Our new merch has been delayed as UPS have been less than punctual with delivering it to us. But hopefully we get in time for our show next Tuesday (June 14th) at The Seahorse for New Music Tuesday! It's put on by Music Nova Scotia and is actually a lot of fun. On top of all that, it is a free show, so I hope that you can make it out and have a few horse-powers (special Seahorse beer) while you're at it. On top of that, our friend Adam from Long Weekends took some promo shots of us recently. It's the start of a whole new series of them we'll be doing, as we are seriously overdue for new ones (check out our press section)... Come to the show on Tuesday, we'll be playing new songs off our upcoming LP, and it's FREE! -PB 05/11/2011
GUITARS & DRUMS ARE FINISHED + UPCOMING SHOW
The title pretty much sums it up. We've been plugging away, and the guitar and drum tracks have been completed for the upcoming album. The mastering still needs to be completed, and we still need to do the album art, and oooooh man... this is stressing me out. Anyway, We have some shows coming up with our pals in LP and Aux. Out! We're pretty excited as there might be a stand up comedian (not a joke... har har). -PB

FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE VAPID EXPANSES OF 'LE STUDIO'
Still in the studio and working very hard. We are currently banging out drum tracks and recording guitars too. Exciting times! Kirstan and I are heading into Sound Market Studios tonight to finish up some drum work, and Chad is laying down some guitar this Saturday night. Also, we are currently making some BIG decisions on where to get our records pressed and the jackets printed for this upcoming LP. Stay tuned... we'll try and get some pictures up here for you soon!
ALSO, we just put in an order for a rad batch of t-shirts from Argy Bargy Printing in Buffalo, NY. Our buddy Alex Kerns from Lemuria will be making the batch himself! Also, we've got pins being made from our favorite Truro-Bro Jamie Densmore, and a special surprise in the works from local Halifax artist Emily Blythe.
Lastly, check out our shows section from time to time as we're consistently adding shows for the summer! -PB 04/05/2011

HEADING UP TO THE ISLAND WITH SOME PALS
So it has been a while since we have updated our news page. Fear not, we still exist! We recently played Fredericton, NB with our good friends from Hospital Grade and Slate Pacific. It was a great show at The Capital and, as always, we are really looking forward to the next opportunity to play such an awesome little venue in such an awesome little town.
This weekend brings new beginnings however. Not for us, but for our friends in Long Weekends who will be travelling up to Charlottetown, PEI with us to play their first show! The show is this Friday, March 25th and we're really looking forward to playing. Coyote (from PEI) are also on the bill, so be sure to come check it out. 7" RELEASE PARTY: SATURDAY, JANUARY 15th @ THE SEAHORSE TAVERN, HALIFAX NS
We've been busy, and needless to say we're preparing for a big push in 2011. We're pretty excited about it. There has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes on booking tours, printing records, sleeves, and inserts, and getting our merch situation in order.
The thing that we are the most excited about is that we finally have an official release date for our new 7"; The Solipsist! Mark your calendar's, as January 15th will be the official release date of The Solipsist. This will be a 7" Vinyl with 4 songs that will also be available for digital download. The record will be exclusively available through Noyes Records (http://noyesrecords.com/store), the Kestrels Store (www.kestrels.ca/store), and select locations throughout the Halifax Area (Taz Records, Alterego's Cafe, etc). Come March 2011, the record will be available through our various distribution channels across the country. Remember, we also ship worldwide!
We're throwing a 7" release party at The Seahorse Tavern on January 15th, and have Sleepless Nights and Hospital Grade lined up to play as well. So, come out and hear the new songs, pick up a new record, drink some Horse Power (Seahorse's own beer by Propeller... sooo good), and rock out!
We're playing a benefit show in Truro this Saturday with L/P, Scott Nicks, & Lake Names at The Old Douglas School. This is a super cool venue, and all the proceeds of this show go to a good cause; raising money for our friends Jon & Rachel who lost their home to fire a few weeks ago... swing by our SHOWS section for more info. Other than that, get stoked for our new 7" and check out the single HERE. -PB 12/03/2010
BENEFIT SHOW IN TRURO
We're always happy to play shows, but we are never happy to hear sad news. Some friends of ours in Truro recently lost their home to a fire. Unfortunately for them, they didn't have insurance either. So, there are some events occurring in the Truro area on Saturday, December 18th to help raise money for them.
The show we're playing will be at the Old Douglas School in Truro, which is a pretty cool little venue. So, we hope that you can come out to the show and show your support for these two great people while rocking out to the K-Birds. All proceeds will go towards raising money for our friends who have lost their home. More details to come, but for now:

TEST PRESSES FOR THE SOLIPSIST ARE IN!
We're really excited about this. This record has officially taken a stab at redefining a postponed release. But as they say across the pond "Keep Calm, and Carry On". Excitement aside, this means that we have to get down to work on finishing the album art, inserts and everything that goes with it. Stay tuned for the release of The Solipsist and be ready to have it in your hands by Christmas.
Also, we continue to work on putting some shows together for the new year and will be getting back to you with news on that very shortly. Simply put, we're trying to time it around the release of the new EP. We're also are storming ahead on recording our new full length which we're happy to announce is 50% complete. By the time that Christmas rolls around we expect to have it 80% done... yet another thing to be excited about. We anticipate to have this release out by next Spring and also expect to have a video made for that LP's single by our friend at Mostly Harmless Productions; James Brown (yes that is his real name!).
In the meantime, here's a track from the upcoming EP The Solipsist and don't forget to check out our STORE... -PB

KESTRELS T-SHIRT PRE-ORDER
We have a batch of T-Shirts in the works right now, and we want you to look extremely cool while wearing one! Be sure to check out our STORE and to pick up one of these handsome t-shirts...
In other news, we have a lot of things in the planning stages right now and are expecting a busy 2011. We are currently planning tours for March 2011, and July 2011, we have The Solipsist EP being released on Noyes Records next month, and are currently working on a full length that's set to be released by June 2011... so stay tuned! Plus, we played Gus' Pub in Halifax last Friday with Cursed Arrows & The Vagrant Hearts. It was a fun show, so thanks to anyone who slogged through the rain to come and check us out. We played some new material as well as a Black Tambourine cover. Check them out HERE and HERE. -PB
11/04/10
So, last Friday we casually popped into the studio at Echo Chamber and recorded some drum and bass tracks for yet another batch of songs. Keep in mind, these have nothing to do with The Solipsist EP and will most likely be released sometime in the first half of 2011. Now, how's THAT for an ambiguous statement? Bottom line: we're keeping busy. Also, we have a show coming up tomorrow night at Gus' Pub in Halifax with Cursed Arrows and The Vagrant Hearts. It's set to be a great show and a fun night... so come check it out!
In the meantime, have you ever wanted to hang out with the K-Birds in the studio? Well, this video is the next best thing. It's a small compilation of footage due to the fact that the memory card in my camera is tiny, and the footage is a little dark too. But it's better than nothing... take a look. -PB
10/29/10
Tonight we are heading into the studio at Echo Chamber to record a batch of songs that will be released after our upcoming 7"; THE SOLIPSIST. Needless to say, I think I speak for the band when I say that we are pretty excited for both of these things. Not only will we be recording a batch of tracks, but I will be playing my NEW DRUMS... Tonight will be a fun night.
ANYWAY, we have a show coming up at Gus' Pub in Halifax on November 5th with Cursed Arrows and The Vagrant Hearts that you should definitely come out to. Both CA and TVH are great bands and it's going to be a really fun.. so don't miss it! We also played the Halifax Pop Explosion recently with Gardening, Not Architecture and Guests. It was a fun show and we were happy to see some familiar faces out there. Speaking of Pop Explosion, I sincerely hope that all who read this got to see at least one HPX show. There were too many shows to choose from at times, which was a good thing really. I was pleasantly surprised by Ty Segall and his gang and the madness that ensued at that show... Two words: mosh pit?
Lastly, here's a video from our our show back in September, which was the first show that the K-Birds played with the new line up. The song is titled DEAD TIME and will be on the upcoming Solipsist EP. -PB
We played our first show with the new lineup last night. It went off well (I think). It's weird - I felt like it was our first show as an entirely new band. We played 4 new songs - 3 of which are on our upcoming 7" entitled 'THE SOLIPSIST'. The tracklisting for said record is: Side A The Light What Happens Side B Dead Time Throw Aggi Off the Bridge You also get a bonus track as part of the mp3 download package which had the working title of 'Green Locked'. That will change. We're working on the art which will draw heavily on the amazing book House of Leaves. As you can tell, one of our problems is doing things on time. We're working on new material so that the gap between this EP and the LP is smaller. We'll have t-shirts soon as well. C 06/21/10 So, finally some news on here. Falls into the good news/bad news categories. THE GOOD: Our new 7" is getting mixed as we speak. It will be 2-3 songs (still making up our minds on that one) and it sounds nice. We'll post links in the appropriate places when we have the songs (hopefully by Friday). THE BAD: This one comes with a pretty heavy, frustrated heart. Adam left the band a few weeks ago. It's not really necessary to go into details, but I think I'd be safe in saying he was a little tired of my fuzz pedal being dimed all of the time. I'm just (half)-joking. Anyway - I won't lie. This has me pretty bummed out and certainly threw the future of our merry band into a tailspin. After some feverish talks with Kirstan, we decided to push forward. We're pretty excited about this 7" and have some other good stuff in the pipeline. C 02/16/10 Posted up at the space. Writing. Recording. Writing. Recording. 12/07/09 We're recording some cover songs first thing in the new year. We're going to release a free covers EP while we're writing and recording another full length. One of the covers is Throw Aggi Off The Bridge by Black Tambourine. Here's a scrappy video for Ridicule! 10/22/09 Our Halifax Pop Explosion gig last night at the Toothy Moose got kind of out of hand. A guitar went through a wall. In other news - PICTURES! 10/16/09 We've reached #5 on CBC Radio 3 as of today! http://radio3.cbc.ca/ 10/14/09 We posted a new review of Primary Colours in the Press section. We also have a new online store where our records and eventually merch will be on sale. |
